Building Your Dream Garden

Gardening tools and a straw hat on the grass in the garden

Chances are, being stuck at home is making you walk around your house and you’re realizing you need to do something with your yard. Even if you’re planning on having us do your hardscaping project, adding a garden is something you can in your free time!

This month, we’re providing a few tips on how to pick the right flowers for your garden. There are many types of flowers and bushes out there, and it can be very overwhelming when it comes to deciding what to incorporate. Let’s see if we can help you narrow your selection down!

Location

You first need to think about the location you are planning on expanding. There are some flowers that need full sun, while there are other flowers that thrive in the shade, and a few that are happy with a little bit of both. Know how much sun your garden will be getting, and keep that in mind when looking at plants.

Water

Like humans, flowers need water to survive! Make sure wherever you are adding your garden, you have easy access to water. This will save you time from having to walk back and forth to your water supply.

Timing Is Everything When It Comes to Color

Many of us want our gardens to be in full bloom all spring and summer long! While not every flower blooms that long, you can strategize your garden to where it has color throughout spring and summer, even leading into fall! Ideas could be:

  • Plant bulbs for the springtime such as daffodils and tulips.
  • Pick warm weather annuals to plant that will bloom during the summer months. There are a multitude to choose from! A few ideas include such as Periwinkle, Coleus, and Wishbone Flower.
  • Add some chrysanthemums (also known as mums) to bring out color in the fall months. They bloom in many different colors, all of which look great with fall decorations.

Before you dive into updating your garden, have a plan. Do your research and know what flowers and plants you want to incorporate.
